Roe deer hunting is among the most widespread and at the same time one of the most selective forms of individual hunting in Europe. The roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is a smaller yet exceptionally cautious and intelligent game species that carefully guards its territory. It is known for its excellent hearing, sense of smell, and ability to move silently even through dense vegetation. The roe deer trophy – the antlers – is renewed every year, and its quality depends on age, genetics, and environmental conditions. The combination of elegance, alertness, and dynamic behaviour during the rut makes the roe deer an exceptional target for precise individual hunting.
Hunting Information
The hunting season begins in spring, when roe bucks have already cleaned their antlers and become active after the winter period. May (in Hungary already from April) and June are ideal for selective hunting of mature animals in lower vegetation. The peak period is the rut at the end of July and beginning of August, when during hot summer days we use calling techniques to attract roe bucks and experience the intense reactions of territorial animals. Hunting is carried out individually, either by stalking or from high seats, mainly during the early morning and evening hours. Great emphasis is placed on proper age and trophy evaluation, as well as on ethical and accurate shooting.
Equipment and Weather
Roe deer hunting requires light, quiet, and functional equipment. A precise rifle of a suitable calibre with quality optics is recommended, as shots are often taken at medium distances in open terrain. Clothing should be adapted to the season – spring brings cold mornings with dew, while summer can be warm but with significant temperature differences between morning and daytime. Waterproof footwear and muted colours are essential, as are patience and the ability to move discreetly.
Accommodation and Catering
The hunting stay includes full board accommodation. Hunters are most commonly accommodated in traditional hunting lodges typical for the respective country, offering an authentic atmosphere and direct contact with the hunting grounds. For those preferring a higher level of comfort, quality guesthouses or smaller hotels can also be arranged. Local cuisine is an important part of the experience – from traditional venison dishes to regional specialities.

Slovakia
In Slovakia, roe deer hunting takes place in a diverse cultural landscape where meadows, fields, and forest belts alternate. This type of environment allows for active stalking as well as observation of multiple animals during a single outing. A stable population and good age structure provide excellent opportunities for quality selective hunting and the possibility of obtaining a medal-class trophy.
Czech Republic
In the Czech Republic, roe deer hunting has a long tradition and a high professional standard. Hunting grounds are systematically managed with a strong emphasis on proper selection and balanced age structure of the game population. The result is strong, well-shaped trophies and a highly cultivated hunting experience.
Poland
Poland offers vast lowland areas and quieter hunting grounds with lower hunting pressure. Roe bucks here achieve very good physical condition, and their antlers are often robust and impressive. Hunting has a calm character and allows hunters to focus on careful trophy selection.
Hungary
In Hungary, the roe deer hunting season starts already in April and is well known for its potential for strong trophies. Fertile agricultural landscapes and favourable conditions for wildlife are reflected in the quality of the antlers. Hunting takes place mainly in more open terrain, where good shooting skills and quick decision-making are essential.
Romania
Romania offers more diverse terrain – from agricultural landscapes to foothill regions. The hunting atmosphere is authentic, often in less frequented hunting grounds with strong contact with nature. Roe bucks here can surprise hunters with both the strength and character of their trophies.
