Mountain goat hunting is one of the most demanding and authentic alpine hunting experiences in North America. This is a backpack hunt, meaning the hunter carries all necessary gear on their back. Overnight stays are in tents directly in the mountains, with daily movement in pursuit of game.
Mountain goats inhabit steep, rocky slopes and high alpine terrain, often above 2,000 meters (6,600 ft). They live in remote and hard-to-reach areas, guaranteeing a true wilderness experience and a physical and mental challenge for every hunter.

About the Mountain Goat
The mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus) belongs to the Bovidae family and is the only living species in its genus. It has a thick, double-layered coat that protects it from extreme cold and wind. Its hooves are perfectly adapted for climbing steep and slippery rocks.
Goats are social animals that typically live in small groups. They are known for their wariness and excellent vision, which allows them to detect predators or humans from a great distance. Females give birth to a single kid annually, which is capable of navigating rugged terrain shortly after birth.
Horn Shape – Billy (Male) vs. Nanny (Female)
Billy – Male
- Horns are thicker at the base – more massive and robust
- Slight backward curve with a shallower arc
- Smooth, gradual curve without a sharp hook
- Horns appear “heavier” and bulkier
Nanny – Female
- Horns are thinner and more delicate, especially at the base
- Steeper curve with a more pronounced hook
- May appear longer visually, though not always the case
- Overall, more slender and sharper in appearance
These differences are most noticeable in a side profile – especially the curvature, base thickness, and horn angle. An experienced guide always assists in gender identification before taking the shot.
Hunting Ethics and Rules
Mountain goat hunting is strictly regulated. Shooting females with young is prohibited. Preference is given to mature males (referred to as “billies”), supporting population sustainability.
Gender identification is based on body size, horn shape, and behavior. Your guide will help ensure ethical and responsible target selection.
