Harvest your own medal-class mouflon ram in Slovakia. The hunt itself is traditionally conducted by stalking during the early morning or evening hours, when mouflons leave the forests in search of food on adjacent fields. The ideal time is the November rut, when the clashing of rams’ horns can be heard from afar, as well as the period from August to September. Hunting a ram on snow in its winter coat also has a charm of its own, doubled by the winter atmosphere. In your leisure time, we will visit nearby castles and historical landmarks or enjoy time in local taverns offering traditional Slovak cuisine and draught beer.
General Information
The mouflon (Ovis musimon) is a wild sheep that is not native to the local fauna; it was introduced to the territory of Slovakia in the 19th century and has since become well established in certain parts of the country. It is a medium-sized cloven-hoofed game species with a compact body, strong limbs, and characteristic curled horns, which in males represent one of the most valuable trophy features. Mouflons reach a body length of approximately 110–130 cm, a shoulder height of about 70–90 cm, and a body weight of roughly 35–55 kg in males, while females are somewhat smaller. The winter coat is denser and darker, often with white markings on the body, whereas the summer coat is shorter and lighter.
Mouflons prefer drier, rocky, and forested habitats, where rugged terrain and good visibility provide advantages for movement and escape from predators. They are extremely vigilant and fast-moving animals, requiring patience, attentiveness, and thorough knowledge of the terrain on the part of the hunter.
Mouflon hunting is a well-established part of hunting practice in Slovakia, and its popularity continues to grow. Mouflons inhabit both free-range areas and managed game enclosures, with population numbers depending to some extent on game management practices, environmental conditions, and migration between hunting grounds. The mouflon trophy—particularly in males with well-developed and symmetrical horns—represents an attractive challenge for many hunters. The horns are never shed, meaning their length and shape remain a permanent part of the trophy, which is evaluated according to internationally recognized measuring systems. Mouflon game management is focused on maintaining a stable population, supporting a healthy age and sex structure, and respecting the biological needs of the species.
Weather
The mouflon hunting season spans several times of the year, with hunts taking place under various climatic conditions—from warm August days to cold January weather. Hunters therefore need to adapt their equipment to layered and often windy conditions, ensuring quality footwear suitable for rough terrain and layered clothing that provides protection from both morning dew and afternoon dampness.
Hunting Information
The most suitable period for hunting is often considered to be from late October to January, when the rut (mating season) takes place and the game is easier to identify in the field due to its behavior.
Hunting is typically carried out by stalking, during which the hunter observes the game and gradually approaches it in the terrain. Mouflon game is known for its high level of alertness and excellent eyesight, which often requires considerable patience and experience on the part of the hunter.
The objective is usually the harvest of a mature ram with high-quality horns, which are evaluated according to length and shape based on recognized international measuring systems.
