General Information
Capercaillie hunting in Sweden has a long tradition connected with northern culture, where local hunters pass on their knowledge from generation to generation. In pine and mixed forests far from civilization, the capercaillie behaves naturally and cautiously – it is a wild bird that will test your movement, silence, and patience. The hunt takes place mostly on snow, in the form of stalking and calling, with encounters with the rooster at dawn being among the most unforgettable moments. The capercaillie in this region grows to impressive size, and thanks to the stable population, this is one of the most beautiful bird hunts in Europe.
Hunting Information
The winter season is ideal for hunting capercaillie and black grouse, as during this time they feed in trees and are more easily observed on the snowy pine tops. Daily temperatures range from 0 down to –30 °C, so it is important to check the weather forecast before departure and choose suitable clothing. However, there is no need to fear the cold – this is an active hunt, with hunters moving on skis or snowshoes, which requires good physical condition.
Hunting takes place throughout the day, often covering several kilometers. The average shooting distance is 150–200 meters, using prone shooting or shooting sticks. The shot must be precise – the body of the black grouse is relatively small, and the hit must be directed at an area about the size of a human clenched fist. Considering the winter conditions, active movement, demanding distances, and the birds’ wariness, this hunt is technically challenging. Nevertheless, the experienced local guide will assist you throughout your stay in any situation.
