Turkey call

Hunting terms

A turkey call is a device used by hunters to mimic the sound of a turkey, typically to attract real turkeys into shooting range. Turkey calls are an essential tool for hunters who pursue wild turkeys, as they allow hunters to replicate the sounds made by turkeys, such as the distinctive gobbles, yelps, clucks, and purrs, which are used to communicate with other turkeys.

There are various types of turkey calls, each designed to produce different sounds to attract turkeys in different situations:

  1. Box Call: A popular and easy-to-use call that consists of a wooden box with a sliding lid (called a paddle) that is rubbed against the box's surface to create a variety of turkey sounds. Box calls are known for their ability to produce loud and distinct calls, making them ideal for calling turkeys over longer distances.

  2. Pot and Slate Call: This call uses a slate surface, often combined with a striker made of wood, bone, or other materials. The striker is dragged across the surface to create soft, realistic turkey sounds, such as clucks or purrs. Pot and slate calls are favored for their versatility and ability to produce subtle, lifelike sounds.

  3. Mouth Call (Diaphragm Call): A small, flexible call that fits inside the hunter's mouth. The hunter uses their tongue and breath to produce a variety of turkey sounds. Mouth calls are popular for their hands-free operation, allowing hunters to remain concealed and ready to shoot while still calling turkeys.

  4. Friction Call: A broader category that includes both box calls and pot-and-slate calls, friction calls use the principle of creating sound through the rubbing or scraping of one material against another. These calls can produce a range of turkey sounds, from aggressive gobbles to soft, contented purrs.

Turkey calls are an integral part of turkey hunting because they help simulate the behavior of a turkey in the wild, luring turkeys into range by making them believe another turkey is nearby. Hunters must use the calls skillfully, understanding the appropriate sounds for different hunting situations and times of the year. When used correctly, turkey calls can significantly increase a hunter's chances of a successful hunt by attracting turkeys to their position.
