Ducks Unlimited (DU)

Miscellaneous

Ducks Unlimited (DU) is one of the most respected and effective conservation organizations in North America. Founded in 1937 during the ecological crisis of the Dust Bowl, its core mission is to conserve, restore, and manage wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl. Over the decades, DU has protected and improved more than 15 million acres of critical habitat across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Its conservation efforts not only support migratory birds like ducks and geese, but also benefit hundreds of other wildlife species, including fish, amphibians, and endangered plants. DU is deeply rooted in science-based conservation, working with private landowners, governmental agencies, and other nonprofit partners to deliver long-term results on the landscape. It focuses heavily on key flyways and breeding areas, such as the Prairie Pothole Region, the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, and the Gulf Coast. The organization is also active in public policy, advocating for legislation and funding that support habitat preservation. Beyond habitat work, DU is committed to educating the public—especially youth—about conservation and ethical hunting. With more than 700,000 members and supporters, DU hosts hundreds of local fundraising banquets and volunteer-driven events each year. It provides resources for hunters, such as its well-regarded magazine and online tools, while encouraging responsible, sustainable waterfowl hunting. The organization also promotes agricultural practices that are compatible with wildlife and clean water. Ducks Unlimited's impact goes far beyond ducks; its work improves water quality, mitigates flooding, enhances biodiversity, and even helps fight climate change through carbon storage in wetlands. For millions of people across North America, DU represents the powerful intersection of tradition, science, and stewardship.
