General information
The roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is a relatively small yet exceptionally alert and intelligent game species, capable of guarding its territory with great caution. It possesses excellent hearing, scent detection, and the ability to move silently even through dense vegetation. The roe buck’s trophy – its antlers – is renewed every year, and its quality depends on age, genetics, and environmental conditions. The combination of elegance, caution, and dynamic behaviour during the rut makes the roe buck an exceptional target for individual and precise hunting.
The area surrounding the town of Mátészalka is located in northeastern Hungary within a lowland region. It is a typical agricultural landscape with minimal elevation, where vast open fields bordered by shelterbelts and occasional smaller forest complexes provide an ideal habitat for high-quality roe bucks. Since there are no other major game species in the area that could negatively affect the roe deer population, conditions for roe deer management are excellent. Traditional Hungarian roe deer hunting needs little introduction among hunters; however, it is important to note that in this particular area, the preferred hunting method is the traditional spot-and-stalk approach combined with vehicle transfers between hunting locations.
Hunting
The hunting season begins in spring, when the roe bucks have already cleaned their antlers and become active again after winter. May (and in Hungary already April) together with June are ideal months for the selective hunting of mature individuals in low vegetation. The peak period comes during the rut at the end of July and beginning of August, when hunters use roe calls during hot summer days and can experience intense reactions from territorial bucks. Hunting outings begin early in the morning and continue as long as the roe deer remain active and moving. Hunting then resumes in the afternoon and continues until dark. The hunting area covers more than 10,000 hectares, offering more than enough space for locating strong and high-quality animals. Approximately 100 trophy roe bucks are harvested in this area annually, with around 20% achieving medal quality. In most cases, roe bucks are hunted at distances of 80–150 metres, although longer shots are also possible.
Equipment and weather
Roe deer hunting requires lightweight, quiet, and functional equipment. A precise rifle in a suitable calibre is recommended – all commonly used calibres in our conditions from .243 WIN up to .300 WIN MAG are appropriate – together with high-quality optics, as shooting often takes place at medium distances in open terrain. Clothing should be adapted to the season: spring brings cold mornings with dew, while summer may be warm but with significant temperature differences between morning and daytime conditions. Waterproof footwear and muted colours are essential, as are patience and the ability to move discreetly.
